Our values, “Always Finding Better Ways,” “Stronger Together” and “Global Force, Local Citizen” come from within – literally. They were shaped with the input of our employees through focus groups, interviews and surveys.

Trailwalking around the Globe
Join one of the world's toughest team challenges. Oxfam Trailwalker requires teams of four to walk 100 kilometers on tough terrain in under 48 hours regardless of weather conditions. More than 22,000 people will participate in 15 Oxfam Trailwalker events this year in 12 countries. Together they will raise approximately US $18 million to help overcome poverty and injustice around the world. We are proud to be the global sponsor of Oxfam's Trailwalker and Trailtrekker endurance events.

Watch the videoEach day, the Women's Lunch Place provides more than 150 homeless women and their children with hot meals, laundry and shower facilities, and a range of social, educational and advocacy services.
One of those services is the Women's Lunch Place Resource Center, where women can learn to advocate for themselves within the government and legal systems and, most importantly, learn to become more empowered and self–sustaining.

Our commitment to environmental sustainability means better workplaces and brighter communities
Every day we consider the environmental impacts of our decisions. Protecting and preserving our natural resources helps us to increase efficiency, attract and retain clients, save money, and engage employees.
We achieved seven ISO certificates in 2012, including Boston, Hangzhou (two locations), Krakow, Luxembourg, Milan and Munich. These are in addition to already-certified buildings in Dublin, Edinburgh and London. As a result of the 2012 assessments, two-thirds of our employees in the EMEA region now work in ISO 14001-compliant buildings.

William Slattery

“My week–long visit in Tanzania left me with the impression that fostering economic growth based on the same approach that has worked in other countries is critical: education and investment in commercial and physical infrastructure over prolonged periods.”
Willie Slattery joined Oxfam for a week–long visit to the Ngorongoro region of northern Tanzania near the Kenya border. His time spent with the Masai tribe confirmed that employees are making a real contribution to the lives of the people of Tanzania through Oxfam events such as Trailtrekker.
State Street is a global sponsor of Oxfam's Trailtrekker and Trailwalker events around the globe. More than 22,000 people will participate in 15 events in 12 countries in 2012 raising approximately US $18 million for Oxfam's international development and humanitarian work.

“Being State Street's volunteer coordinator for the National Urban League Conference was an awesome experience for me. It challenged my project management abilities and provided me with new interpersonal, time management and coordination skills.”
As volunteer coordinator for the National Urban League Conference (NUL), Linette Sanders recruited and planned volunteer projects for more than 100 State Street employees, retirees, friends and family. She also provided assistance with more than 130 activities throughout the week of the conference.
State Street was a presenting sponsor of the 2011 NUL Conference held in Boston from July 27–30, 2011. The conference featured nationally-recognized business, government, academia and arts leaders who addressed the theme, “Jobs Rebuild America,” touching upon issues related to education, healthcare, housing and employment.

“It was very obvious how much the members enjoyed speaking to us and having us around. Everyone was smiling, laughing and singing all day long. The day was a great success and will be an experience I will always remember.”
Tammy and her colleagues organized a volunteer day at the Jewish Care Leonard Sainer Special Day Care Centre this past November to give members an enjoyable and stimulating day, while family and caretakers received some time for themselves. The day included baking, arts and crafts, quizzes, computer games, beauty treatments and a tea–dance.
The Jewish Care Leonard Sainer Special Day Care Centre provides programming for people who have memory impairment and/or a diagnosis of a type of dementia.

“'As chair of the Australian Women's Exchange, I can attest to how State Street believes in fostering the development of women. This is illustrated in our support and endorsement of the Australian Women's Exchange, which is one of more than 20 women employee groups across the company.”
Louise Clarke currently oversees the Australian Women's Exchange (AWE) network, a group that aims to connect female employees and provide forums for them to learn, network and discuss issues such as career advancement and work/life balance.

“It was an honor to compete in the Sun Life Stanley International Dragon Boat Race on behalf of State Street. We are very proud of our Gold Bowl trophy and loved the excitement of competing in this event.”
Luis Lage was the captain of the Hong Kong dragon boat team, the “State Street Clippers,” which participated in the Hong Kong Sun Life Stanley International Dragon Boat race on June 6, 2011. The State Street Clippers placed fifth in the competition, receiving a Gold Bowl trophy.
In addition to this race, State Street competed in the Boston and Toronto Dragon Boat races, bringing together more than 60 employees around the world and taking on more than 170 dragon boat teams.
Denney Morrison

“All causes are important. While I support many causes, adoption tops my list for support because it’s more of a solution than a cause; it solves so many social, economic and emotional needs of children. I believe every child deserves a forever family.”
Denney Morrison is a long-time volunteer with several organizations in Ontario, Canada and an avid supporter of volunteerism at State Street. Denney commits much of his time to the Adoption Council of Ontario (ACO) and Victim Services of Peel, for which he has served numerous roles, from mentor, to fundraiser, to board member. He is a founding member of the ACO's FunWalk, which annually attracts more than 300 people and raises $25,000 for the organization.
Karen Brooks

“Participating in this ongoing volunteer project makes me feel like I'm making an impact in my community. There are so many nonprofit organizations and individuals that count on the Harvesters Community Food Network for their everyday necessities, and it feels good to be part of the great work they do.”
Karen Brooks was one of 125 employees and their families who supported the Harvesters Community Food Network by volunteering at the Harvesters warehouse sorting food that provides thousands of meals to those in need, and by helping fold bags at the State Street facility in support of the National Association of Letter Carriers annual food drive that benefits Harvesters. This Global Outreach activity is among one of the Kansas City office's most popular and successful volunteer events.
The Harvesters Community Network collects food and household products for more than 620 nonprofit agencies through its 26 direct service area, which includes emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelter, children's homes, homes for mentally disabled and shelters for battered persons. The organization impacts more than 66,000 different people each week in the Kansas City area.
Anna Cho
Seoul
“Anyone can make a difference in any culture, community or context. At the end of the day, it's about doing your best to help those around you and being grateful for what you have.”
Anna Cho is an active volunteer in her community, whether she's based in Boston or Seoul. While living and working in Boston, Anna gave much of her free time to charitable work by cooking and serving meals at the Pine Street Inn, and running a summer soccer camp for underprivileged youth in Cambridge.
Anna quickly immersed herself in volunteer efforts once in South Korea, where she is the Community Support Program (CSP) Committee chairperson for Seoul and helped established a strong relationship with the Yeomyung School. She helped design a mentoring program between State Street employees and the school's students who are North Korean refugees. Most of these children have lost a parent en route to South Korea and need adult attention and guidance provided through the mentoring program.
Swee Leen Chua

“AWWA is a powerful organization that makes a true impact on the children they serve. It was an honor to spend time out of my day to make a difference in those children's lives.”
Swee Leen Chua was one of 20 volunteers who participated in the Bollywood Veggies volunteer project with Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA), where they spent the morning with children from AWWA’s SMILES program and participated in a guided farm tour at Bollywood Veggies.
AWWA is an organization that provides educational services to those with disabilities. The SMILES program is one initiative driven by AWWA that provides therapy, social support and constructive activities to participants while caretakers are at work.
Dawn Cooper

“Not only were children coming in during all weather conditions for meals, many brought family as well. I'm so grateful that I was able to take time out of the work day to make a difference for these children and families.”
Dawn Cooper, along with a group of State Street employees, commemorated Nelson Mandela Day by volunteering for the Aquarius Feeding Scheme at Christian David Primary School and Delta Primary School in Steenberg, providing children with a warm meal, which for some, would be their only food all day.
The Aquarius Feeding Scheme helps provide meals and financial support to 15 schools throughout Cape Town. State Street employees are some of the many volunteers who assist the Aquarius Feeding Scheme in supplying and making meals for each of the schools, as well as assisting with fundraising donations.
Bill Hillman

“Volunteering with Back on My Feet and managing the running club has been very rewarding for me. It has allowed me to create my own running community and connect with lots of other runners from different backgrounds.”
Bill Hillman manages the Running Club in Boston and has partnered with the organization, Back on My Feet. Back on My Feet is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to creating independence and self–sufficiency within the homeless and other underserved populations by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self–esteem.
Bill has brought recipients from the organization on site to talk to the running club members, has recruited volunteers to participate in Back on My Feet's morning runs that occur at 5:30 a.m. three times a week and also personally volunteers with the organization every Monday morning by helping lead runs with the recipients.
Kevin Jen

“Contributing more than 200 hours to the Taipei Orphan Welfare Foundation with my fellow colleagues is an accomplishment I'm very proud of.”
Kevin Jen, along with more than 25 employees in the Taiwan office, worked together to contribute more than 200 volunteer hours to the children of the Taipei Orphan Welfare Foundation through participation in the National Orphanage Olympics and by organizing a Movie Day.
These two initiatives provided support to enable the Taipei Orphan Welfare Foundation to carry out their mission of caring for the education and growth of children. Its programs all focus on the welfare of children through tutoring, psychological consulting, scholarships, emergency aid and offering parents childcare centers.

“Volunteering for the Red Sox Foundation was an amazing experience. In addition to selling raffle tickets at several Red Sox games, I also had the opportunity to make a difference for all the charities supported by the Red Sox Foundation, including the Jimmy Fund, Dimock Community Health Center, Red Sox Scholars and Youth Baseball programs.”
Kristin Spalding and more than 100 volunteers from State Street teamed up with the Red Sox Foundation to sell raffle tickets to Red Sox patrons at more than 45 home games. These tickets are used in a 50/50 raffle where half the proceeds go to the winner and the other half go to sponsor the Red Sox Foundation charities.
The Red Sox Foundation is the official team charity of the Boston Red Sox, focusing on serving the health, education, recreation and social service needs of children and families in need across New England.
Jeanette Kuhl

“The Sacramento Food Bank and Family Service Center continues to make a lasting impact on the Sacramento community, and it's been an honor to be involved. Working closely with those in need has been a very rewarding experience; their appreciation is priceless.”
Jeanette Kuhl was one of the many State Street employees who gathered at the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services Center's Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on January 24, 2012 to celebrate the opening of the new Education and Technology Center. The 22,500 square–foot center is more than triple the size of the original 7,000 square–foot facility and houses 120 computers and 11 classrooms, more than double the original 40 computers and five classrooms. The new facility will serve close to 3,000 of the 15,000 people the program serves each month.
With support from Jeanette and other State Street volunteers, the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services Center received a total gift of US $100,000 from State Street. The money directly went toward funding the computers, software, and peripherals for their Adult Education Technology Lab in the center.

State Street Foundation, Inc.
In 1977, State Street established the State Street Foundation, a tax-exempt organization, to provide support for the less advantaged in the communities where we live and work. In 2007, the Foundation was incorporated to enhance our ability to make grants to qualified non-US nonprofit and charitable organizations; its financial statements are independently audited. Although we do not follow a formulaic approach to fund the Foundation, our goal is to direct at least 1 percent of State Street’s pretax profits to the Foundation, and we have achieved that goal over the past three years. In 2011, State Street contributed $20.5 million to the Foundation, providing funding for our strategic grantmaking, disaster relief and employee workplace giving programs, including Global Giving and Matching Gift.
Energy Star and ISO 14001 Site Certifications
We believe our environmental practices have a positive impact on the environment and a direct effect on our ability to attract and retain clients, on our efforts to operate cost-effectively, and on our long-term sustainability. We launched an Environmental Management System (EMS) in 2006, and updated it in 2010, to formally monitor and track our direct impact through energy and water usage, paper consumption and recycling. As part of the EMS, State Street has achieved ISO 14001 certification for key locations in London, Dublin, Edinburgh and its headquarters in Boston. We have a carbon emissions reduction plan in place that includes increasing energy efficiency, purchasing green power and reducing energy usage. State Street’s Environmental Sustainability (ES) program is overseen by the executive-level CR Committee and supported by an ES Working Group and the Office of Environmental Sustainability.

Kai Dickerson

Colleagues refer to Kai's reporting services work with State Street Global Markets as her “day job.” Quick to point out Kai's professional knowledge and big picture attitude, what really makes Kai stand out is the work she does in her free time.
As the chair of the Disabilities Awareness Alliance and an active member of the Working Parents Group, Asian Professionals Group and State Street Connect, Kai works tirelessly to connect employees around a common cause. Her work is paying off in dividends: these groups are some of the fastest growing employee networks at State Street.
Mark Vieira
Officer, Fund Accounting, Kilkenny
Mark has an eye towards the future. As Ireland's subject matter expert for State Street's online client information delivery portal, Mark helps clients access the data they need to manage their financial information. But if helping clients use the portal is the description of Mark's job, innovating towards the future is the spirit of his work.
Mark goes beyond understanding clients’ current needs to anticipate what their future needs may be. Then he gets to work finding solutions that can make our clients and shareholders successful — both now and in the future.
