Volunteerism

State Street recognizes that its employees are its most important resource. We also realize that their time and talent can be important resources for the communities in which they live and work. Our nearly 27,000 employees worldwide can serve as ambassadors who represent State Street and act upon our concerns about local community issues. We have a long tradition of encouraging and supporting our employees' involvement with community and civic activities. With the launch in 2001 of State Street Global OutreachTM, a company-wide volunteer program, we strengthened even further our support for employee participation in local communities.

The Global Outreach program fosters volunteerism in three ways — by encouraging participation in company-sponsored programs, by helping match employees who wish to volunteer their time and expertise with charitable organizations that are reflective of their interests and by providing employees the opportunity to devote two business days per year to serve their communities. Some volunteer projects are open to employees' family members and friends who are not employed by State Street.

In 2007, more than 8,000 State Street volunteers and alumni served 52,000 hours on 1,000 projects. This saved our charitable partners more than $950,000, based on the hourly wage for volunteers as determined by Independent Sector, a nonprofit and philanthropic advocacy and research group. Since the launch of State Street Global Outreach in 2001 - and the Spirit of State Street Alumni program in 2003 - more than 36,000 employees and alumni have volunteered more than 215,000 hours in 2,900 service projects.
