The investment industry has traditionally relied on a set of standard methodologies to classify, measure and document investment choices. But some of these metrics may have become overused and ineffective. We call these "artifacts."

Building on the findings of the recent study the "Folklore of Finance: How Beliefs and Behaviors Sabotage Success in the Investment Management Industry," the Center of Applied Research took a closer look at these industry standards. What we found is that artifacts widely used in our industry may have become obstacles to successful outcomes.

In the coming months, we’ll take a look at how the industry is using artifacts. We’ll explore their effectiveness. We’ll challenge their value. And most importantly, we’ll give you multiple perspectives. Our goal is to uncover these artifacts, determine the value they bring to investment decision making and, in the process, reinvent the industry’s folklore.
