Since our last update, the past months have continued to be dominated by the European elections and their aftermath. A new European Commission has just taken office and the work of the new Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) in the European Union (EU) Parliament is underway. This autumn also sees the completion of a significant milestone for the EU’s banking union project. November 2014 marks the start of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), with the European Central Bank (ECB) assuming direct supervision of 120 banks, representing almost 85 percent of total banking assets in the Euro area.
