Our monthly video series offers an updated analysis of our institutional investor indicators.

  • Our Institutional Investor Holdings Indicator shows the aggregate holdings of institutional investors across three asset classes: stocks, bonds and cash. This simple information can tell us a lot about how investors view the economy and markets.
  • Our Institutional Investor Risk Appetite Indicator is based on flows — buying and selling activity — rather than portfolio positions. It reveals whether investors, in aggregate, are buying risk or selling it. While the Holdings Indicator tells us about the current location, the Risk Appetite Indicator tells us about the direction of travel.

Several notable trends emerged from investor behavior in November. One key trend is that institutional investors predominantly maintained neutral positions. The uncertainty arising from the government shutdown led to reduced market conviction. Consequently, investors hesitated to implement significant portfolio adjustments as they await clearer economic data.

Additionally, long-term investors continue to hold a high concentration of equities in US technology stocks. However, some have started to diversify their portfolios by investing in Europe and China. Despite this, allocations to broader emerging markets remain relatively low.

Finally, investors continue to refrain from allocating funds to fixed income assets. Despite the data uncertainty caused by the US government shutdown, US Treasury securities did not see significant inflows. Equities persist as the preferred asset class among investors, while cash ranks as a secondary option.
