Mark Shelton
Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Mark Shelton is executive vice president and general counsel and corporate secretary at State Street. He leads the company’s Legal Department, which includes the global legal function and adjacent functions focused on managing risk and the firm’s regulatory and external environment, including security, public policy, sustainability, and regulatory relations. Mark is a member of the Executive Committee, the company’s senior leadership team.

Mark is an accomplished financial institutions attorney with a commercial orientation and deep expertise across the financial services sector. He built his career handling complex multi-jurisdictional regulatory and legal issues facing large global financial institutions and has more than 30 years of experience practicing law in both private practice and public sector environments.

Prior to joining State Street, Mark was general counsel for Barclays Corporate and Investment Bank. Earlier in his career, he served as Americas general counsel and global head of Investigations at UBS, and was a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. Mark began his legal career in the Office of General Counsel at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, following a clerkship on the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Mark earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He serves on the Board of the American Red Cross in Greater New York and the Board Executive Committee for the Saint David’s School.
