Barry Smith

Barry Smith is executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) of the Global Institutional Group (GIG) at State Street Global Advisors. He is also a member of our Executive Management Group.

In his role as COO of GIG, Barry is responsible for leading the strategic direction and growth of our institutional business, driving globally consistent approaches to how we sell to and service institutional clients. In addition to developing GIG’s sales and service operating platform and infrastructure, Barry oversees the State Street Global Advisors’ Global Cash Business. He also serves as President of State Street Global Advisors Trust Company, State Street Global Advisors Funds Distributors, LLC and State Street Global Advisors Canada, Ltd., and is a member of several other legal entity boards and internal governance committees.

Prior to his role as COO of GIG, Barry was head of Americas for GIG, overseeing sales and relationship management in the United States, Canada and Latin America. Barry has more than 25 years of experience in financial services with a focus on institutional sales and distribution. Prior to joining State Street Global Advisors in 2010, Barry worked at BlackRock, where he was managing director and head of the Private Label Cash Management business. Barry joined BlackRock via its acquisition of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, where he was head of institutional cash management and held various additional sales and marketing management roles during his tenure.

Barry earned a Bachelor of Arts in financial economics from Saint Anselm College, where he has also served as a member and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees.
